Grupo Himalayo

Historia

El grupo himalayo de lenguas forma grupo aparte dentro de las tibetano-birmanas pero algunas de sus relaciones son remotas y oscuras. Comprende las lenguas de Nepal y el noroeste de la India que no son tibetanas ni sal, ni adi-mising-nishi.  En general los grupos derivados del tibetano  habitan la región septentrional de Nepal o la mitad septentrional de una tercera parte del país al oeste de Katmandú; un grupo índico habita la parte meridional, las llanuras de Terai. Además ha habido gran emigración lo que ha esparcido el nepalí, la lengua índica nacional, hacia el norte y el este por todo el país y hacia el nordeste hacia la India.
